  1. About one hundred years ago my great grandfather in Cloondahamper near Tuam was visiting at a neighbour's house. He was only eighteen years of age but his father had been dead for two years. He was the sole support of his mother and seven other members of the family. That year the potato crop was very bad and very few had enough for their wants. They lived beside Mr. Digby's big farm where he had acres and acres under tillage. One large field contained tons and tons of turnips. In the absense of potatoes this vegetable was very much sought after.
