- Before the National schools were established the pupils were taught under hedges and on the top of hills and sometimes in barns or woods.
There was an old chapel in Menlough once and the pupils used to be taught there. The teachers used to spend a few days in every child's house because they had no houses themselves.. They used to teach Latin, Greek and all sorts of subjects and they did not know how to speak the English language.
The children had no pens or black-boards at that time. They used to write on slates with quills.
