- Hedge schools were very common about a hundred years ago.
Terence Travers who lived in the parish of Inishmagrath, Co. Leitrim was one who taught in a hedge school and some times in his own house.
To secure a fire during the Winter each child had to bring a few sods of turf each morning. - The teacher and pupils could not stay more than two days in the same place afraid of the priesthunter, and the only way they had to gather their little flock was to let three loud whistles and the children knew the signal and used to gather to that place.
