  1. Potatoes are the principal crop grown on our farm. From two and a half acres of land up to four acres occupy potatoes each year. We do not set the same amount of potatoes every year. This is because potatoes will not grow well when they are set for a second year in the same field, and some of the fields are not as large as the others.
    It is usually my brother Matthew who prepares the ground for the potatoes. Some ground is manured before it is ploughed. Potatoes are set either in drills or in ridges.
    We set some ridges early in a garden. Ridges are made with spades. The ridges are measured with a long piece of rope and they
