  1. The people of Ireland about eighty years ago made their own candles. They got a handful of rushes and they peeled them all but one strip. Then they got a lump of butter and melted it. They dipped the rushes into the butter; then they twisted them up and when they were cool again they dipped them into the liquid again and so on until a candle was formed.
