  1. In this district many women knit most of the clothes required for their household such as cardigan, jumpers, caps, gloves, scarfs and socks. Some women spin the thread, while others buy it in a shop. Carding, spinning and knitting is done mostly in the winter when the nights are long.
    There are four spinning wheels in our neighbourhood all of which are small.
    Some handy women make under-clothes for men and for their children and the material they generally use is flannel.
    There was a knitting industry recently established in Lahardane, Co.Mayo, by Miss Durcan, and I am informed the machine cost £40.
