  1. Forty or fifty years ago the people in this district made candles out of rushes and tallow. They were called dip candles and were used especially in the winter.
    There were some rushes pulled and cut into convenient lengths. Then the skin was peeled off them except a small strip to strengthen the candle. Next they were dipped into melted suet and left to dry.
    They made splendid candles and were much used by poor people. While burning they were generally left standing in the neck of empty bottles.
