  1. The local fairs are held in the village of Ballintra and the adjoining towns of Ballyshannon and Donegal. The fairs are generally held in the fair-green a large green field on the out-skirts of the towns. Buyers often call at farmers houses to buy cattle. It is carried on still in this district.
Fairs were held in some place long ago where they are not held now. In olden times fairs were held beside castles and all sorts of games were played in the evening.
The fair in this village is held in the fair green. There is no toll paid on the cattle. When an animal is sold luck money is given to the buyer. When a bargain is made the parties to the bargain strike hands. When a seller is being paid he returns half a crown or five shillings to the buyer for luck. The animals are marked with keel when sold. When an animal is sold the rope is also given. The great fairs of the year are the Harvest fair and the May fair. The biggest Harvest fair around this district is held in Ballyshannon and the biggest May fair is held in Donegal. There is a pig market in our district every Tuesday.
