There are not many notable strong men in this district now but it was not so long ago. There were many strong, but Darby Dempsey was the strongest of them all. He lived in the west of Attymass about sixty or seventy years ago. He was a highwayman and he and other men went through the country robbing and fighting. One day as he and his followers were going to Dublin they came to where there was a big heavy carriage and horses in a deep drain. The owner of the carriage asked them to help him to take it out but they refused. Darby was the last in the crowd but he did not refuse, he said, "I will help you". Darby went and lifted the carriage out single handed. Then the owner of it gave him all the money he had and told him not to be afraid that the police would not catch him. After that he went home and
