“There was an ould couple living in Downing long ago.”
There was an ould couple living in Downing long ago. They were over 60 years of age and they had no family.
The man used, every night nearly, go to a neighbour's house for a game of cards and his wife used to wait up by the fire 'til he'd come home. They had a dog and she used to keep the dog inside until the husband would come home.
This night the dog started to jump and row and tear the ashes, and the poor woman got a terrible fright. It wasn't long 'til a terrible big black dog appeared a the room door; and he faced up the chimney(continues on next page)
