    This poem was composed about the year 1827 about Daniel O'Connell.

    This poem was composed about the year 1827 about Daniel O'Connell. He was a great admirer of the Liberator referred to by him as the son of an old woman, meaning the old country. During this period there were in the country what was known as "Pattymen". There lived near Moynalty an old man who was a woolcomber by trade. This man was disrespected by his "party" of giving away the secrets to his master who was a magistrate. He was taken out one night to a plantation where his ears were cut off by a sheep shears. This man was Mickly Dolan nicknamed afterwards "crabby Dolan" and the two man told off to perform the operation were Tom Smyth (Tom go) and Larry Donoghue both of Cloughbally. Dolan knew Smyth who was arrested but on
