Another legend tells that the Danes were retreating across that portion of the country with a wagon load of plundered gold. The ground being soft, the wagon sank, and the Danes, being too closely pursued, had not time to raise it, so they buried it with the intention of coming back for it at another time. It is said that they never returned and the gold is still buried there. I can not link this story with the gold in the fort however, but I've heard both told several times.

Beneath the shade of purple hill's
    A little village lies,
And to the natives of the place
    'Tis bound by many ties.
Where 'ere they be as years roll on
    On home or foreign shore,
    In memory they see again
    Their native Cappamore.
