- The names given to our locality are of much importance, and are closely connected with the history of our country.The name of our town in Irish is "Dromcollchoille" which means the back of the hazel wood.Remnants of these are still to be seen in the district. The local river or stream takes its name from the ford of the markets, which were similar to our fairs of to-day.
The name of the river is teh Átha Margadh.Close to our town is a place kown as "Springfield", in Irish the name is "Gort na Tiobraide." It means the field of well.The fields known as the priest's meadows are noted in history as the scene of a great battle, between teh Earl of Desmond and the English in Springfield.
