- In this district, in my grandfather's time, people wore no boots until they reached the age of 20 or so.
Boots are not made in this locality now but in former years, travelling cobblers were common.
A few bootmakers reside in the town of Skibbereen. Clogs are now unknown but were common enough about 30 years ago. There was a tan yard in Skibbereen about 40 years ago.
When boots were first made, poorer people could not afford them.
Beside the public road in Gorthbreak, in a field belonging to Mr McNeill there is a rock still known as "Carraigín na mBan". On this stone, the women used to sit on Sundays to put on their boots before they entered Fahawa Church. This saved boot-wear as the owners had but one pair.
Cures. To cure chilblains on the feet, wash them in the water used by the smith in the forge.
Sore feet can be eased if washed in hot potato water
Piseóg Old people said it was unlucky to throw out foot water after 9p.m.
