There are two forges in this parish, one belongs to Michael Fitzpatrick and the other to Michael Costello. Their forefathers have been smiths for many generations. One of the forges is situated in town and the other stands near the Catlemore crossroads.
The forge is a long building with a roof of galvanised iron. There is one fireplace. The bellows is a large leather bag with a handle which is used to blow the fire. The principal implements used by the smith are the anvil, the sledge, the hammer, the tongs and the file.
The smith shoes horses and donkeys. He mends farm implements such as plough harrows, spades and axes.
The smith does some of his work such as putting tyres on cart wheels in the open air. This work is done near a stream.
The smiths are usually very strong men.
The forge is a centre for story-telling and gossip.- Bailitheoir
