after washing them, they used to make their own starch out of potatoes. They washed the potatoes clean, and then grated them up into a basin of clean water. They next strained them through a cloth into another basin. This was left to settle and all the starch went to the bottom, the water that remained on top was drained off and the starch was washed again. When it was made it was cut up into junks and left out into the sun to bleach.
The people long ago did all their ploughing with wooden ploughs, before they could afford to make Iron ploughs. The timber they used was the Ash and also the sycamore.
They made timber beds and stools and forms without nails, they mortised them, they cut square holes in the timber and then shaped more timber so that it would fit into it well. This work was done so well that it remains to this day.
They made their churns out of fir commonly called bog dale, there was a man in the district who had this trade.
