- The Famine in Ireland
When the great famine had spread over this country, the wall of Ards' Demesne was built.
The people were very poor at that time and would gladly do anything to get money to buy their allowance of meal.
There are very few walls as well built, and it is two miles long.
When the people were building it, they were paid four pence a day and if they had not it done very well they would get no pay.
There was a place at Tommy Forest's, Creenasmere, where they gave out broth, (during the Famine). The two iron boilers in which it was made, are there still. The broth was given out in the same way as the flour, the people flocked there and were given a bowlful each.
