Long ago there was two old women were living near one another.

Long ago there was two old women were living near one another. One of them had eight cows and the other had only three, yet the woman with the three cows had more milk and butter than the other. The woman of the three cows had a servant boy and he met the woman of the eight cows one day, and she was telling him about the milk and the butter, but he told her that he would try and help her in some way.
It was a long time after that and the boy did not forget her promise. On May Night the boy went to bed early and slept sound until twelve o'clock. Then he was awakened by some noise in the kitchen, and he arose and dressed himself. Then the boy went down to the kitchen and he saw the old woman of the house and she had a bottle in her hand and she [was] shaking it. After some time she left the bottle in the table and went out. The boy did the same thing and when he went out he was changed into a hare, and he followed the old woman until they came to a fort, where several other hares were. They were not long there until the Devil appeared to them and he said he could do nothing for them as there was a male hare among them.
