  1. A. This works on the same principle as a pliers or nippers. When open, the rush is inserted. The weight of B. keeps the rush firm.
    B. It served to hold the resin (or rosin) candle, which preceded the wax and tallow candles.
    C. This spike was fixed in a stout wooden stick which was fastened to a flat block of wood at the ground.
