  1. Hedge Schools
    Long ago when schools were not in existence some intelligent person went about teaching the people. About a half a mile away from my house there is a field called Murray's field. This field is situated between Moate and Clara in County Offaly in the townsland of Parkwood. At the end of the field is a little grove and it was under one of the trees in this grove that school was carried on in penal days.
    Miss Boland was the name of the teacher who taught at Parkwood. People came to her from everywhere to hear her teaching. They sat under the tree all day learning all they could. When it was too late to teach any longer the teacher went into the house beside her
