There was a man named Kiernan who taught in a barn of Campbells in Clonave. There was no road into Clonave at that time and the police could not get into it. The master taught at night and worked in the day time. As far as can be remembered he taught reading and writing. The scholars wrote on slates with slate pencils. He had a big slate in the wall like our black board now. - In the year 1786 there was a hedge school master in Ballykildevan. His name was Master Donleavy.
