  1. About one hundred years ago when the Penal Laws were in existence in this country no Catholic could educate his children unless he sent them to a Protestant school. Catholic teachers used to teach at the backs of ditches and in old used houses.
    There was a man named Kiernan who taught in a barn of Campbells in Clonave. There was no road into Clonave at that time and the police could not get into it. The master taught at night and worked in the day time. As far as can be remembered he taught reading and writing. The scholars wrote on slates with slate pencils. He had a big slate in the wall like our black board now.
