  1. The food they ate in olden times in this district was blackbirds and waterhens roasted. They hung them before a good fire with a plate under it to catch the gravy. They ate them with dry oaten bread. They ate three good meals in the day breakfast, dinner and supper.
    In the harvest time the men worked before their breakfast. They worked for about one hour and then came in and ate their breakfast. After dinner they usually drank a mug of buttermilk. The people used very large mugs for drinking. They ate porridge for supper and also ate it before breakfast.
    Long ago the people had three meals a day. In the morning they had porridge and milk. They used to have oaten bread and wheaten bread. The
