  1. The maraiges take place mostly before Lent and just after Easter.
People do not get married at Shrove or on Shrove Tuesday.
The month which is counted unlucky is December and the day is Saturday. It is said,
    "Monday for health,
    Tuesday for wealth,
Wednesday the best day of all,
    Thursday for losses,
    Friday for crosses
    Saturday no day at all."
The old customs connected with Shrove Tuesday are that the people make pancakes, and the mothers of the houses send their children to the houses next door to get a sieve.
When they go in the other people go over to the fire and blacken their faces.
Stocks of goods are given also such as a cow, or fowl, or some furniture
