  1. In this district there are a great many forts and even still people - at least some old people - believe that it is unlucky to meddle with them, and they tell terrible stories of misfortunes that fell on certain people because they did so.
    There is a fort within thirty yards of this school. It is a huge platform, raised from fifteen to twenty feet or more over the land around it. It is twenty-four yards in diameter, and is perfectly level on top. The bank of earth surrounding it is broken down in many places ; one of these is bigger and more regular then the others and looks as if it were the entrance to the fort. From the top of the fort two others can be seen, one a quarter of a mile east of this school, and the other something farther in the same direction.
