  1. There was a famine in the years 1846 and 1847. At that time the country was thickly populated. The old people can point out the sites of little houses of that time which are now gone.
    During that year the potato crop failed owing to the blight. Most of the people at that time were only tenants on the ground, because their farms had been taken from them by the English landlords.
