  1. Long ago there were no lamps but instead there were candles of home manufacture. The people gathered all the fat they did not want. Then they 'rendered' it and they rolled a thread of flour-bag in the dripping. When there was a layer of grease on the thread they took it out and let it cool. Then they put it in again and took it out and so on, they kept putting it in and taking it out until it was as thick as the handle of a twig. Then they made it round and it was then a candle.
