  1. In olden times lamps were different from the present times. At night the people got a cocoa box or something like this. A hole an inch square was cut in the lid. A piece of cloth was put down this hole for a wick. Corduroy or some other stiff cloth like this was best. The oil was put into the box and the wick was lit. When this was done it was left on the back-stone of the fire.
    Some people had only a piece of fir stuck in a hole in the back stone for lamp.
