- The cuckoo comes to Ireland at the end of April. There are a lot of old sayings and pishrogs about her. If you have money in your pocket the first time you hear the cuckoo you will have money for the year. If you are looking towards a graveyard the first time you hear the cuckoo you will die before the year is out. If there is a rib of hair on your left foot the first time you hear you will have luck for the year. It is said that when the cuckoo sees the first cock of hay she flies away. It is said that the cuckoo changes into a hawk before she leaves the country. If the cuckoo crows on a leaveless bush the crops will be bad.
