- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)When surrounding mountains gushed forth their waters
And sterile made was our fertile land.
Your active labourers reanimated
Such persecution could not withstand
Their grand improvements they evacuated
And emigrated to a foreign land
It was then the farmers should become paupers;
They could not pay up the labour rate.
They are in the workhouse all separated
Each day bewailing their wretched fate
Their wifes and children they loved so dearly
They can't afford them the least relief
They are all gone and I am lonely.
For all my friends I mourn and weep
Oh. Father Dear! you have left me silent
In the wilds of Kerry I'm doomed to stop
Since my Friends and neighbours all emigrated
I bid adieu to the Lonesome Gap.
Song written by Sexton, of OGonnelloe in the famine days. "The Lonesome Gap" was once a happy downland where there was full and plenty
Upwards of seventy families lived there until famine stalked over the district.
Words were collected by the late Dr. P.J. Holmes, Killaloe
Sexton died 42 years ago and was then 80 years.- Bailitheoir
