They believed that, by doing this, they would have a blessing on their crops, for the year.

   In other parts of the country. A custom they had, was, to drive the beasts of the farm, into the corner of a meadow, or field. Then they got a furze-bush, and lit it from the bon-fire. They struck each beast, on the back with it, "saying at the same time", "May the Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, preserve my share. Amen.
