- In olden times feastdays were observed in a much different way than nowadays.
On St. Martin's Day some fowl or animal was sure to be killed in order to have the blood spilled.
If a man happened to have a sick cow and promised to have the cow killed in honour of St. Martin any year he wished the cow would be cured.
A certain man had a sick calf and promised to kill her for St. Martins if she were cured. The calf was cured in a short time.
