  1. On the top of Loughanlea mountain (about three miles from Bailieboro there was a small lake. The water and the mud at the bottom of this lake contained a cure for skin disease. Hence the name "Loc an Léigus" - the lake of the cure. In the latter years of the eighteenth century many people suffering from skin disease came to Bailieboro to take this cure. They lodged in the town or neighbourhood and went out every day to the mountain to bathe themselves in the lake and rub the mid to their skins.
    It is also told that a chemist who saw a chance of making profit, took the water of this lake to Dublin and sold it at two shillings a gallon in the city, such was the belief in
