- The houses in Bailieboro district in former times were usually thatched. Many of them had mud walls with pointed gables, but some were built with lime and sand and stones. The thatched roof was of oaten or wheaten straw. Sometimes even rushes were used.
Most of these houses had a settlebed in the kitchen. This served as a seat by day and as a bed by night. Sometimes there were two settlebeds in the kitchen. The kitchen was always used as a bed room as most houses contained only a room and kitchen. The fire place was in the gablewall and a turf or timber fire was burned on the hearth. The front of the chimney was made of mortar and stones. Bog-deal was very often used for firewood and "portans" or sods cut on the bog.
