  1. Thistles and dock-weed are the weeds on our farm. Almost every herb of the field is useful for something. Some weeds are useful as food for animals. Cumfrey is good food for pigs. The root of cumfrey, if grated and mixed with lard and used (used) as a poultice, is a splendid cure for sprains.
Rushes grow on boggy ground, and rag-weed grows on sandy soil. Set-fast or buttercup is a very hard weed to exterminate.
The wild arum-lily is a very poisonous plant, and if eaten by cattle will certainly prove fatal.
Blossoms of gorse make a good yellow dye. If ivy is boiled and strained, the water may be used for washing black and dark-blue material.
