Mostly herrings were used in this season. These were cooked across the tongs over a clean fire. In Black fast Days no breakfast was eaten, and dinner was ready at half past eleven or at twelve o'clock.
No milk, butter, fat or meat were used on those days, and bread was wet with water. Fish could be used only at dinner. Eggs were not much used except on Easter Sunday and were considered a novelty. Some people ate as much as twelve eggs each for their breakfast.
Tea was only used on certain occasions such as parties and on Sundays etc. Mugs and cups were only used on special occasions and a drink was taken out of noggins or little wooden tubs.
