  1. In the years of 1846 and 1847 there was a great famine in Ireland, but there two years were not the worst, because in those years there was some food left over, but in a few years after the food was gone and the people had very little food to eat.
    Money was very scarce no matter how much work was done, because the people had not the food nor the money.
    If a man got sixpence a day he thought he was made up, such was those awful famine times, here is an example of how hard off the people were for food. A man called James Mulvaney of Latnadrowna, mowed a stook of oats, he then threshed it, and got two big stones and grownd it up between them.
    Next, he got it and brought it up to the top of the hill, and shook the shells out of it, and
