  1. The potato is sown on our farm at home. There is half an acre under potatoes each year. Its is about the same amount every year. My father hires a man for four days with two horses to prepare the ground to sow the potatoes. Before we get the ground turned up, we put top dressing on it and then plough it. The potatoes are sown in drills. They are made with a drilling plough and two horses. The spade is not much used now except in a garden because it would take too long to make the drills with it. Before the potatoes are sown, they are cut in two and whichever side has an eye in it, it is kept in a pit for a couple of days. Then they are brought to the field and the people set them in the drills about a foot apart. Then there is ashes or turf mull thrown on them to
