the thatch. The fireplace was made of two large granite stones about 3 feet wide with a grate in the centre. Turf and sticks were principally used in olden times.

Many years ago the houses were made of clay, and most of them were thatched. Some people had a bed in the kitchen. This was covered in the day time. The fire was usually in the middle of the floor. There was a hole in the middle of the floor with iron around it. The rush soaked in grease was the only light used at night time.
