  1. There was a hedge school on School-house hill in Ballyhearth. It was a lean-too, roofed with straw. The Children sat around on blocks of timber, under the lean-too. They were taught reading and spelling but no writing. My great grand-father went to school there, and he was a very good scholar. He was born about 1830 and he remembered the ‘Big Wind’ well. He is only about twenty years dead.
