- We have a churn at home. It is called a dash churn. It is shaped like a barrel and has a dash which is pulled upwards and downwards to churn the milk. We usually [ ] once a week in Winter and twice in Summer.When strangers call while churning is going on they have to take a turn churning the milk, or else the people say they bring away all the butter with them.Water is sometimes poured in to make the milk churn quickly.When the churning is finished the butter is taken out and washed then salt is put on it. Then it is made into rolls with two butter spades.The buttermilk is used for making soda cakes.The old people used to put a lighted coal under the churn in case a man came in to light his pipe.
