  1. Some time ago probably in the sixties or seventies there lived in a part of the village of Ballycumber a family of that happy-go-lucky type. They had their faults those peasants of other day but their vices were few and save for the occasional bursts of hilarity and the used of the shillelagh when intoxicated they were an innocent moral people. The residence of this particular family was the scene of many a game and joke. On one occasion a party of youths dammed the drain outside the house with the result that the water rushed into the kitchen and bedroom. The sleeping occupants were forced to arise and with the help of neighbours the man of the house succeeded in getting his children safely out. Suddenly a shout was raised for the woman of the house was found to still be inside. On being informed to that effect the husband replied "Save the pig first boys I can get an "Ould" thing like her at any time."
