    was placed in the "quern", and was crushed by another very hard stone. This was a slow process.
    The work is done very quickly now. Inside the mill are two round slabs of stone, placed one upon the other. The bottom one is fixed, but the top one is made to turn round very quickly. The grain is dropped through a hole in the top stone. As this whirls round, the grain falls between the stones, and crushes it into powder by their rough surfaces.
    This is the wholemeal.
    This wholemeal is used by the people of the district for making bread.
