When finished the thatched roof made the house very nice and comfortable.In some places the thatched houses may still be seen. There are not many of them in the district at the present time, and on that account we have no "thatchers" in the locality.
The best known of the "thatchers" in former times were, Jack Forrestal, Rathnure, Redmond Nolan and John Behan, Gurrawn. They are all dead. These men earned their living be thatching. - There is a corn mill situated in Ballybawn, Rathnure, owned by Mr. John Quigley.
