- Candle makingCandles were made in every house in this district up to forty years ago.
The fat of the sheep was got, put into a large pot or pan to heat until it formed grease which was called tallow. A cotton thread was got. While the tallow was hot it was placed in a mould with the cotton thread down through the centre of the tallow for the wick. It was left in the mould for two days to cool. Then the mould was placed in hot water for a minute so that the condle could be easily taken out of the mould ready for use.
Candlemaking was discontinued after a time because it was cheaper to buy the candles in the towns than to be losing time making them in the homes. The process was slow and troublesome.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
