  1. There are a few inscribed tombs or images of Saints around Ferns district.
    At Clone, in the little cemetery of St Mary's, we find a sun-dial, the only means people had of telling the time in olden days. It is built in the shape of a holy water font. It has a hollow in the centre and a cross and compass pointing eastward.
    Around the door of the old Church are found heads or images in rough stone - traditionally supposed to be heads or images of St Peter and St Paul.
    The little Church was built in the twelvth century by the abbot and two monks, and was thatched. The monks cut the wattles and sallies for roofing at a nearby stream.
    There is also a well convenient, and used by the people for domestic purposes.
