There are not many ruins of old schools in this district now, except those at Coolaw. This school has not been in use since about fifty years ago. The teacher of this school was the late Mrs Bennett of Taghmon and her assistant teacher was Miss Mary Ann Kehoe. The two were natives of the village and they did not lodge in farmer's houses.There were many subjects taught in the school, such as writing, reading, spelling, arithmetic, Geography, History, Catechism, and Bible-History.
There was never any Irish taught or spoken in former years until about twelve or fourteen years ago.The children at that time wrote on slates.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
