    in the Custom House at Wexford for the export trade and forty thousand more for the home demand not entered. That is another big industry that died out and it was penal laws against it that wiped it out. In 1692 two petitions were presented to the English House of Commons by the fishermen of Folkstone and Oldborough stating that they were injured by the herring trade of Wexford and Waterford. The Irish fishermen shipped their cured herrings to the Straits and forestalled and ruined the petitioners.
    The redress of their grievances that they sought was granted to them. The Cromwellian Government was inundated with petitions from Yarmouth and other English fishing ports praying for the suppression of the Irish shipping
