- There was a school in Clonarney in olden times. It was known as a hedge school. It was in the townland of Mabestown joining Sheepstown. And it was held in a shed the property of the late Mr Darcy. The name of the teacher was Master White and he was a native of the district. And during his leisure time he used to teach the well to-do farmers of the district at their homes. The teacher did his best to keep the language alive as it was on the downward grade. Both Irish and English books were used they were very scarce and often four or five would have to look into the one book. Writing was done on a flag with cut stone and late with the quill on paper. The seating was very poor for the children it consisted(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
