    Kilmessan which is near the Hill of Tara.
    Like the great Finn and Oisin in whose footsteps he trod, he was a great athlete. About thirty two years ago, this fair-haired youth, together with some of the local boys might be seen playing football or hurling or running in the important Fair Green of Bective. He was a great footballer and often proved his worth in many a hard fought game when the Kilmessan Gaelic Football club, then in their prime, fought successfully for the championship of the royal county.
    His great speed and endurance on the football field soon caught the eye of one Dinny Barrett, a policeman of Kilmessan, who advised him to try long distance running.
