- When tea became known to the people in this district the people did not know how to use it. Some of the first families to purchase it were the Mathew's and this is how they made it.
Having bought it a considerable amount of the new tea, they procured a large pot and placed it over the fire. They filled the pot with water and when the water had boiled they put a large quantity of the tea into the boiling water. They separated the water from the tea-leaves and they set aside the leaves for the supper. From this story it will be known that these people made the tea in the way in which stirabout was made.On another occasion these same people were accustomed to rear a large quantity of dogs. As they were good neighbours one of their acquaintances asked them for a young dog. They answered that they were not sure if they could afford one at present as they had only fifteen dogs on hands.An old man and his wife lived in Smarmore and some neighbours asked them for a sup of buttermilk. The woman said she was sorry she had none, and her husband said "Well Nancy if you have none don't give them any.
